This is the first of Angelou's work I've read though, so maybe I can find that in some of her other writing, probably in her autobiographies. I was also not overly fond of the religious aspects, but that's just a personal preference. I just felt like there was a little something missing, that there was more to the story, and although it is quite personal I suppose, I wish it would've dug deeper. I absolutely loved the parts about her life, where she comes from and where she's been, though I would have loved them all to be a bit longer, to have a bit more flesh on their bones.Īctually, I wanted that throughout the book: I wanted more. This book contains stories from Angelou's life, mixed with parts of wisdom and knowledge she has accumulated throughout her life. She's intelligent, humble and feels very much like a mother to us all, appropriately enough with the title of the book. You get a good sense of what kind of woman Angelou is. The writing in this is simple but lovely. ![]() I think the best way to describe it is that it's like a hug from a wise and loving woman. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() We are in the midst of a cultural moment. That's why my body of work as a scientist, author, professor, speaker, and advocate for body liberation always comes back to the impact of belonging or not belonging. Like most people with marginalized identities, my experience has taught me that it's hard to be yourself and feel like you belong in a culture that is hostile to your existence. Seeing Hugh’s sorrow, though, is “When you realize you’d give anything to make that other person stop hurting, if only so he can tear your head off again.” Sedaris, raised in hurricane country, isn’t much surprised. But it turns poignant when the Sea Section, the vacation home on Emerald Isle, North Carolina, they all share, is destroyed by Hurricane Florence. The first part of “Hurricane Season” is a funny account of his relationship with Hugh and the bickering between Hugh and the Sedaris family. He writes about other kinds of loss as well. Lou was a character, Sedaris realizes, but that’s what created the tight bond among his children - having to deal with him. They have to tackle the condition of their childhood home, where Lou has been hoarding for several decades - his clothes, some so old they’re rotting, “filled seven large closets, one of them a walk-in, and hung off the shower-curtain rods in all three bathrooms.” Some of the essays reveal less than wonderful details about Lou, like his sometimes cruel or creepy behavior toward his kids. ![]() ![]() St Mary's Chapel beside it dates from 1508.
